Karol Szymanowski’s (1882-1937) “Etude in B minor” Op. 4 No. 3 is one of the most beautiful musical pieces of late Romanticism. Due to its nature and used harmony it brings to mind etudes by Aleksander Skriabin and Fryderyk Chopin. As the work of an 19-years-old composer the etude is characterised by a bold musical language. Kept at a slow pace it gradually reaches a dramatic, full of expression culmination. The ”Etude”, that was originally designed for piano, brought Szymanowski fame and popularity. At the beginning of the 20th century Ignacy Jan Paderewski included the piece into his repertoire. The whole commotion caused by the unprecedented success of Szymanowski’s piece was commented by him in a letter to Grzegorz Fitblberg: “It’s bad to compose your IX Symphony at such young age”. It was Fitblberg who arranged the “Etude in B minor” for symphonic orchestra.
