Cello fight

Cello fight

04 February 2013

The composers of contemporary music clearly love the cello. Is it a coincidence that artists such as Witold Lutoslawski, Andrzej Panufnik or Krzysztof Penderecki wrote concerts for this instrument? They discovered new abilities of the cello by using new, unused before techniques of playing it. To this group also belongs Marek Stachowski (1936 – 2004) who his adventure with composing begun by studying under Krzysztof Penderecki. He combines his compositional creativity with education activities, for many years he was also the rector of the Music Academy in Krakow. He composed the cello concert in 1988 for cellist Boris Pergamenschnikow.  The concert is characterized by a clear design and sophisticated harmony. Each part has only one, distinct climaxed and coda. This is also the case in the final part Pezzo finale con moto.
The composition brings to mind scene of a dramatic escape. Who is running from who? We can observe a fight for life or death. Two people are fighting or maybe one person is struggling with some adversity? However, after a while after a moment of weakness, which is a sudden fall – he gathers strength and raises. He is determined, he has nothing to loose. In the final battle we strike a mortal blow.
